He is a resident of Vallejo, California who currently lives in San Jose, California.
On July 4, 2007, Chestnut won the 92nd Annual Nathan Hot Dog Eating Contest, defeating the defending champion Takeru “Tsunami” Kobayashi by consuming 66 hot dogs and bread (HDB) in 12 minutes, which set a new world record. The following year, he managed to defend his title by winning 5 Hot Dog Hot-offs after binding Kobayashi in consuming 59 HDB in 10 minutes. On July 4, 2009, Chestnut defeated Kobayashi again, by consuming a new 68 HDB world record and won a third title in a row. On July 4, 2010, Chestnut brought home the 4th Mustard Belt respectively -after eating 54 HDB. The 2010 contest is a escape victory, because Kobayashi did not compete because of a contract dispute with Major League Eating. On July 4, 2011, he won the fifth successive championship with 62 HDB. 2012 marked his sixth victory in succession, when Chestnut tied his own world record from 2009 by devouring 68 HDB. In 2013, Chestnut won the seventh consecutive title, a total of 69 HDB eating, broke the previous world record.
